I guess I'll need to get lower gearing...

You'd probably kill the battery on that single climb. ;-)

Jensie is a hoot!

Bopple Hill

I love hills and the Finger Lakes area is filled with them. Most of them I have climbed dozens and dozens of times. Bopple Hill has a max grade of 24%. The first time that I attempted it my lowest gear was a 42 x 21. When I reached the steep section I pushed my leg down and nothing happened. I baled off the bike and found myself sliding down the pavement on my plastic bottomed cycling shoes. I skied about 20 feet down the hill and finally was able to steer the bike and myself over to the side of the road. My teammates that were with me were laughing their tails off. I took off my shoes and walked up the hill in my socks. I have since successfully climbed the hill twice in slightly better 39 x 25 gear.

I found this video on YouTube, it will give you an idea what the climb is like.

@Tom

At least that climb is paved. Steepest I have climbed is Achambo Rd in D2R2, 27%, rutted dirt. I made it, but on a cross bike 30x32. 39x25, no thanks. Where is Bopple Rd.? I enjoyed riding around Ithaca during law school, up Buffalo St. to school, out Rt 79 to Enfield home, pretty manly commute.

Jens is awesome. When I did the Dempsey with him, he was eating the free breakfast at Fairfield Inn with us, if there was a bar he probably would have been just like that.

Scary and awful memories

Those videos almost make me sick. My best, or worse, efforts was 25% and I almost bailed too. I pushed on my pedal as hard as I could and barely moved. Fortunately it was only 20 yards or so.

I used love surprising guys on 'a new route' that suddenly after a blind turn had a 25% on a turn. You stood, or you stood still. Sorted out the guys that lacked the riding experience of that sort of surprise. ;)

One one particular ride an older guy that I was riding with [my age now] when I was early 40s did it to me. I shared that experience and surprise method until everyone had warned everyone among our constituents.

Dan, Bopple Hill is on the southwest side of Canandaigua Lake.

Photo off my altimeter bike computer after descending the Mostelegg Pass in Switzerland:

I rode up the same pass a few weeks later and had a recorded max gradient of 28% on the ascent, so the real maximum is probably somewhere between the two readings. It was pretty steep the whole way - you gain 730m of elevation in about 5.5km, so an average of slightly over 13% for the entire climb. I stopped a couple of times to take photos - this one is taken near the top:
