SRAM E-Tap AXS 12 speed

Here's the news on the latest SRAM road group from BikeRumor:
https://bikerumor.com/2019/02/06/sram-red-etap-axs-12-speed-wireless-road-bike-group-complete-technical-overview/

There are some interesting changes, though I'm not onboard with 10-tooth cogs on road cassettes. Besides, going higher on the high end makes no sense whatsoever.

For the dirt set, here's the scoop on the new wireless Eagle group:
https://bikerumor.com/2019/02/06/sram-eagle-axs-wireless-mountain-bike-group-complete-technical-overview/

Here's the phone app that ties it all together:
https://bikerumor.com/2019/02/06/sram-axs-wireless-control-system-is-the-all-access-pass-to-future-components/

It's nice that at least some of the components are cross-compatible, which provides some flexibility to be creative in your bike design.

I dislike 11 tooth cogs a lot, so I can't imagine a 10. I'm hoping that Campy expands its 12 cassette line to include a 12-27. I like close ratio gears so no interest in a mega range cassette on a road/gravel bike.

I'm 100% with you on that!

I wouldn't really have a problem with a 12-29 for the road if that was all that was available. For my gravel rigs, I like to have a bit lower than 1:1 gearing, so a 12-32 would be ideal with 46/30 chainrings.

Great minds think alike

>>so a 12-32 would be ideal with 46/30 chainrings.<<

That's exactly what I have on my cross bike, with ancient technology (and 10 speed cluster). Got me over D2R2....

Agree totally on 11, no less a 10. But the 11 on Single front chainring is OK. To me having the 11 tooth kinds make my 11 speed a ten speed.

My fav setup is actually 36/53 Q-Rings with my 14-28 Juniors 11s cassette. I have used this setup with an 11-36 Sunrace upper end cassette with slight noise in the 36 at the rear. With the Di2 R8070 Shadow GS with it's 39T capacity it cure some ills with add hoc gearing at the edges.

Nutha trick, my Madone is 10 speed shifters with a RD-6700-GS. I use an 11-32, 11-28, 11-30 11 speed cassette and chain. So it is a 12-32, 12-28, 12-30 depending. So I can swap any SHi 11 speed wheel/cassette onto the normally 10 speed bike, and loose the 11s. ;)

Works perfectly. Won't try the juniors on there though, a 15-28 rations the ratio door a bit too tight.

All those 11s SHi wheel/cassettes work on all three 11s Ergo setups, 2 SR and one Chorus as well.

Agree here as well. The Disc Conquest is 28/42 chainset with 11-32 Di2 RD-6870-SS. I love this gearing. Never got to try a 30/46, as nice as that sounds. But also have a triple 26/39/46 that seldom sees the 26, until it does. ;)

Unfortunately, neither SRAM or Shimano make a 12-32 11-speed cassette. IRD makes one, if you can find it. I just learned that Miche does too (p/n: CALP1BS1232) but I can't find a domestic supplier. I did find a source in the UK and it will cost ~$70 to get it here.

Old skool

Just for fun, my setup is a 12-32 10 wheedle IRD cassette with a 46/30 Velo Orange crank, basically a TA knockoff, and old Chorus 10 speed. Somehow it all works.

I have a 11-23 cassette, which I use on my Mt Washington blue with a 20/32/42 Suntour microdrive crank. I. Also have a 12-29, and yes I have used the 20/29. Gears are fun!

"Gears are fun!"

And needed... Flat landing is boring...

Anyone notice 1sr link:

Oh, and when you’re in the small chainring, the 10-tooth cog is electronically blocked out, so you can’t run a small-small combo.

When I put the R8070-GS RD on my 6870 Di2 bike it locked out the two bottom cassette cogs when on the small ring. If you were in the 11 or 12 cog and changed to the small ring up front it would shift the rear to the 3rd cog. I did not look into it, as it was a test to see how it would work with the 11-36 cassette.

I plan to use the RD-8070 GS with a narrow wide 1x chain ring. I put the RD-6870-SS back on when the bike went out the door. [sold]

The Di2 locking out the 2 smallest dogs on many cassettes is Shimanos (AKA Big Brother) way of telling you it wants to control your shifting pattern, to use Synchro and to go to the big ring and bigger cogs. Really annoying.

You can cheat by using the E-Tube program and tell the system you have a 39/53 crank and 12/25 cassette or something. You also turn off Synchro, turn off some Gear setting I cannot remember, then the system will shift down to the 2nd smallest cog. Not to the smallest though.

The caveat is if you like gadgets and like using Di2 setup with a Garmin or Wahoo and want to see on screen what gear combos you’re in, cheating might display different combos than what you are actually using. I got around this by running a 14-28 Junior cassette, which the E-Tube system is Ok with, I live in my big ring, have good range and hill gears for my area.

I’m certain that SRAMs intent with 12 spd road is to do away with the front derailer and have everybody use 1X cranks.

Actually, I was surprised it worked at all considering I have some old pieces in my systems and external 1st gen batteries. I have to be careful what I allow to update, or even if my PC in on the Net when I diddle the 6770 system I still have running. The one with the 28/42 chainset FWIW.

The Ultregra Di2 on my gravel rig will shift into any gear combination; nothing is blocked. I currently have it set up with Synchro-Shift, but I worked with it extensively in standard shift mode prior to that.

I just saw that the price of the replacement AXS chainring/power meter at their 50% off trade-in price is still $410! Who the heck do they think is going to pay that just to replace their chainrings???

Somebody at SRAM has gone completely off the rails.

Yes, both my setup 6770 and 6780 do. But when I put the Shadow RD R8070-GS on the 6870 bike [for the GS cage and 39T capacity] is when the programing altered without me diddling.

Glad I'm old and 11 will outlive me-all cassettes currently shift on anybody's system and only 2 freehubs to deal with. In the new world order, we have another spindle size, incompatible chains and cassettes yada yada. If you have one 15k bike its great. If you have 4 or more 2-3k used bikes, not so much. This is the death spiral of the industry-more money from each member of a smaller audience.

I am with GP on that point of order.

In case no one noticed, it was not until 11s Campy & Shimano wheel/cassette cross compatibility came into play ERGO groupos started popping up here.

I don't know about that; I've been riding Campy Ergo since the 9-speed days and I've been espousing their virtues here the whole time.
