Facebook Stolen cars Groups is effective, and fast too.

Tuesday night the Del Sol got stolen inner NE Portland. My kid discovered Wed morning when it was not there, and not towed either.

This morning, due to a post on the group someone spotted it and called the cops, and it was recovered. I saw a later picture on the group of it on the tow truck. Zoomed in and took the phone number off the truck door and called them without even calling the cops again.

Police had left a message on my kids V-Mail late this morning. I went to re-con to see if it was not damaged into un-driveability, it wasn't.

Beside the Stereo, sub, amps and speakers being gone, and some trunk lock cylinder area damage, it is intact.

Thief musta used a similar key to get in and drive it away, no door or ignition cylinder damage. When the cylinders have had key porn on them for 25 years, there is enough slack and wear another old key works if close.

Oh, it was out of gas and slept in by a heavy smoker apparently. Probably had the engine running and heat on until it ran out.

Never got in the trunk for the backpack of goodies, note pad, gaming crap, camping stuff etc. Not from lack of trying looking at the truck lock body area damage...

So not as bad an outcome as expected. Internet to the rescue. ;)

I didn't know that FB page existed. Glad you got it back relatively unharmed.

I didn't either. My millennial kids OTOH have internet in their DNA. And my kids started early consider I had a server farm in the basement when they were single digit ages. ;)

Quite luckily the cars daily driver use/state was not disturbed. It just smells and has no tunes. So 'Google Play Music' and head phones probably in use.

April, not aware of a FB group for bike. But a long well established Stolen Bike Registry exist here.

The Del Sol is getting sold as soon as the INS company comes to look at it Monday. My kid was smart enough to take my pushy parenty advice to at least have comp coverage, collision on a 24 year old car not sure worth it.

Just got back from picking up a nice clean original unadulterated 140k EX Coupe v-tec 1.7 motor, and 5 speed. had new tires, timing belt and water pump @ 135k. An extra car that got little use according to seller. I had a hard time believing it, but it was a flawless deal, seller a court officer here. What a T crosser and I dotter, smokes! College kids car when not at non local college they said.

We swapped pictures of live steam engines they are into. Turns out we each have 3 live steam engines. Except theirs 7-1/4" ga., ours wee 3.5" ga. ;)

My kids pain is healed...

Hmmm, just bought my first "new" (2015) car in 30 years, perhaps the most-stolen model (Camry), I'm getting all paranoid now.

I'll have to at least install a hidden demobilizing switch like I have on my old truck.
Anything like that which is home-spun will flummox any car thief that's in a hurry.

A 2015 has some key protection at least. I read things like hidden ignition kills etc piss them off when it won't start. And the if I cant have it I am going to trash it even worse is common. One theory...

Visible things like the club steering lock variants may be effective deterrents, they may just look for a car without one etc.

BTW, with the 94 Del Sol and the Prelude I had I always used the club.

It was on the floor in the car, and got stolen with the car. I gave the one that was in my Prelude for the EX Coupe. Wonder how long that will get used before complacency once again settles.

I did not use the clubs at home or near by towns, but for sure at malls and anywhere within the urban boundaries...

I like your logic, better to prevent any entry attempt at all.

And I have one of those Clubs that I bought just because it was almost free.
So thanks for the reminder!

Around here, once in a while a car disappears from the neighborhood, and I'm thankful to have a local Sheriff's vehicle parked across the street most of the time.

I noticed it won't be so easy to put a switch in, given that today's cars are so sealed up around the dash.

My car "turned over" it's first 20k miles yesterday, it's almost new in that regard. I payed rather little for it because of some seemingly minor bodywork issues in a few places, but from 20' it does look nearly new. I buffed out half of the visible issues today, the others won't buff out, there is one 3x12" area that begs for a quarter-panel repaint and a shallow ~3" dent near the top of the front fender.

Keep in mind that while a Club may deter a casual thief, they're completely worthless if your car is a high-value target. Thieves simply cut through the steering wheel with a hacksaw and remove the Club, then drive off. I saw a video of this a while back and it took all of ten seconds.

Sparky, between all of the issues you're constantly having with auto accidents and various kinds of crime, why do you want to live where you are?

Same with B/E and your house. They are going to get in.

But various kinds of crime??

My Sis in LA and also the one in TN have same problems with accidents in family/friends. I attribute this to smart phone use in cars mostly IME. Not geographic IMO. Not to mention my wife still working has to use 3 of the worst roadways for work daily, twice. Knock on wood, I've not had an issue personally. [types while bobbing head in ducking motion]

The Del Sol was visiting [overnight] in inner NE PDX. That would be like visiting Camden when we lived in Joisey. But car get swiped at the malls just like back in NJ. This Del SOl theft was one of convenience, easy key jiggle/jimmy a lock with a similar key. Especially (as I said above) with such an old worn ignition cylinder. The passenger door was left unlocked my kid is pretty sure.

The replacement Honda was parked same place for visit again the other night. My Murphy Sphincter was in pucker mode.
