GMC Professional Grade?
I started the last political thread so I think I should post a cycling thread to bring us back to our roots.
The GMC Truck ad is in heavy rotation in the TDF coverage. They promote themselves as "Professional Grade". I think they should have looked a little bit more when they cast the bike rider in the truck ad.

Right
That's a weird commercial from several points of view. And yes, the rider does not exhibit souplesse.
In fact, the kid looks better on the bike.

Froome even looks more natural on the bike than that actor....

I've always thought that Stephen Roche was the epitome of a rider who looked good on the bike. Even when he was absolutely eyeballs-out, as when he closed a couple of minutes gap on Delgado up a mountain to save the 1987 TdF. At the end of that stage he collapsed and was given oxygen. When the doctor asked him a while later if he was feeling OK, his answer was: "Oui, mais pas de femme tout de suite".
Have a look at

.
Froome, by contrast, looks like a cross between a spider and one of the small toy dogs with waggling heads that people put in their cars.

American Flyer
I have seen it and thought it was one of the worst movies I have ever seen. I thought Breaking Away was one of the best. I can't explain how the same guy made both.
I think I first read of souplesse in an old VeloSnooze article on Jacques Boyer.
Best looking rider on the bike I have seen was the late Ted Smith, who was in the Buffalo Bicycle Club when I was a member in '75. He was a pro in the early '50s and won a Euro Pro race (by some accounts, the first American to do so).

I agree with dan on the movies.
As for the trucks, maybe what they mean by "Professional Grade" is that the simplest jobs are nearly impossible to perform. I just finished working on my Chevy truck. Don't get me started.

That commercial is bizarre. It's almost offensive to me to compare the way a cyclist feels about a bike with how anyone thinks about a truck.
But maybe I just don't give a damn about trucks (and not much more about cars), so I don't get it. I'm obviously not the target audience.
As for "American Flyers," when I finally got around to seeing it after hearing so many bad things about it, I was kind of surprised that I enjoyed it. It's no "Breaking Away," but it's not that bad, IMHO.

Anyone else notice the first shot, presumably the same guy as a young kid on his 20" bike? Then I guess the next shot of the same kid grown up??
The kid/actor had "souplesse"... Does it wear off or something? ;)
