OT: automobile upgrade

outgoing car: 2007 530xi with 119K – wonderful 8 years of ownership, but spent $2K last year in maintenance, staring at more than that this year… with who knows what might follow.

incoming car: 2010 535xi with 40K – only 3 years newer (and still an 8 year old car) but crazy low miles -- thats an average of 5K PER YEAR! it still smells new.

both are basically "the same" car, chassis/sheetmetal is the same, but incoming is the last of this generation and does feature some meaningful updates as well as everything being a teensy bit different.

newer gen went to a twin-turbo and jumped to 300hp. i drive like an old man, but it's nice having an excess of power/torque. fingers crossed that the HP fuel pump will not rear its head. loving the camel leather..."soft like buttah"..corinthian perhaps? ;-)

Enjoy, are you selling off, or did you sell the other one?

My friend just did the same thing. Upgraded to a 4 year newer car with 120k less on the clock. Same car, different and better color.

His old one since we met was missing the edge hood chrome piece, tore off in a car wash years ago. Guess what happened to the replacement mint car first time he went to the car wash. ;)

Just me guessing, you are the guy who's perfect used [not to mention maintained with records] car is the easiest to sell for the highest price.

outgoing vehicle condition

after my pre-transaction cleanup it looked alot better than it had in months!

i do try to keep things nice and keep records. honestly, if i wasnt staring at a bunch of expensive maintenance, i would have kept it. but it was far from a showpiece, i havent been able to park in the garage for 1.5 years!

You forgot to put 'The Thrill is Gone music playing' in brackets after that I guess.

some upgrades

crazy-fresh tints, to keep the interior cooler and minimize UV deterioration. image looks waaaay darker than they are in real life:

front pre-EU-style euro plate, covering up the screw-holes from the (un-needed in MI) front-plate bracket:

Hate empty screw holes!

No detail is too small, eh Walter...:)

Nice car, looks new.

I've thought about an upgrade but it's hard for me to get motivated until my existing car starts to screw up, which hasn't happened yet.

I'm not going to buy another ICE vehicle. I'll keep the present one (a 2007 Benz B200) until I find an EV I want that has have sufficient range for my purposes. I'll have a look at the Jaguar i-Pace when it arrives here later this year, as it's not as big as the Tesla SUV and has a 90kWh battery and 300 mile range.

As we have 10kW of solar panels on our roof, and generate several times as much power as we use, charging an EV is going to be a pretty low cost exercise.

10KW from panels?! that's killer -- you can basically run your entire house on that!

i have a 9.5KW gasoline generator for emergency use.

Looks nice but the front passenger windows are a state m.v. violation and a ticket magnet for NY and NJ; cops dislike them as they pose a safety risk for them when pulling a vehicle over. Some hot climate states like AZ they are legal.

front windows no problem with a "note from your doctor" in MI. fwiw...i have the good sense to roll windows down and keep hands on the wheel in the event i'm pulled over.

We use on average about 15kWh/day, and averaged over the whole year, the panels generate about 45kWh/day - obviously less in winter than summer. So we haven't had an electricity bill since we built this house four years ago - the bills they send us say "Credit, do not pay". We use the credits to cover the water rates and gas bills. We also installed a 10kWh battery last year, so it charges off the panels during the day and we draw from it once the sun goes down.

One of our neighbours about ten houses down the road has 30kW on their roof, split across three phases and eight inverters. They've had that in place since 2010, and at the time they installed it the authorities were trying to encourage rooftop solar by offering good feed-in tariffs, so they've been getting 47c/kWh for what they generate, about three time what we are paid, as we got in too late. They have their output monitoring going to pvoutput.org, and I had a look at it and calculated that they've made about $160k from their panels since installation.

I used Google Earth to count the panels on their roof - there are 132 of them. Plug this lat/long into Google Earth and zoom in: 35°19'53.08" S 149°07'54.81" E
