Life of Orange Seal in tyre seems a bit less than a year

My back tyre went a bit soft riding home on Wednesday - the tubeless tyres had been mounted about a year ago with 80ml of Orange Seal in each tyre. When I got home I checked the tyre and found what looked like a small piece of metal embedded in it. I wasn't able to get it out with a small screwdriver blade or pair of tweezers, so I had to deflate and remove the tyre. Found that what I had thought was a small piece of metal was actually this, with just the tip showing on the outside:

<a href='https://photos.google.com/share/AF1QipOr40PdGtIl1oT9w-mqA-Rh9KO5-7AEUXQJXwM4fqvuWvWOFIGFL0kgn3C-4LfU0w?key=ZmpnM000U2VlREsxekN0MGpBVGIyZDJNcGhxNGF3&source=ctrlq.org'><img src='https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/5JUguNF7h7d8ARhhHk5hrhgIa2qzf6BDuA63kS3W6_0CyoclGc38qgoXGI1Sx2ulekTmkUYwzbwHrvKOP9196zyc76J5d3yU4aZx-_LQTLX9Qg0csxFt817z9SLqDP3tbCbdIlII0w=w1200' /></a>

The 80ml of Orange Seal in the tyre had mostly dried out - there wasn't much that a paper towel soaked up and I was able to peel quite a lot if it off the inside of the tyre in large sheets of latex.

Anyway, I remounted the tyre, injected another 80ml of Orange Seal, and inflated and spun the tyre around. A small amount of sealant appeared on the outside where the hole had been, but it's now sealed and the tyre was still up to pressure this morning.

I also dismounted the front tyre to check, and similarly found the sealant almost completely dried out, so replaced that as well.

That's good to know

It appears to last 2-3 times as long as Stan's.

Sealant death

A recent blog on the Bicycle Quarterly web site talks about sealant life and Jan Heine is talking a pretty frequent sealant refresh.

My last order was multiple 2 oz bottles of Stanz. The quart of the Bontrager that reviews best for latex tube I only got to fill 6 tires. Note to self, don't buy bigger bottles. But couldn't find either of these two in small portions when I looked.

The WTB 16 oz., same. Filled a few tires and wound up throwing the rear away.

Time to clean and replenish a few, thanks for reminding me. Going to set a Thunderbird reminder of dates 9 mo out for replenishment as I redo each. ;)

I've asked my LBS to see if they can get me a bottle of this sealant, which the manufacturer claims won't dry out for the life of the tyre: http://www.finishlineusa.com/products/tubeless-tire-sealant/sealant
