Health Reminder/Caution

Damn that male pattern sunburn.

After I had a growth removed last spring, I developed several new cancerous sites this year. I have three surgeries scheduled, and a photodyanamic therapy (www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/treatment/types/surgery/photodynamic-fact-sheet) for my scalp and forehead.

Nothing major, but it does get you thinking.

So cover up and use sunscreen, and design routes that stay under the trees, in the shade.

Not to mention a lot of us lack the thick blocking layer we once had called hair. Gotta slather the sun screen on your bald spots. This way the sweat can make it run into your eyes too. ;)

Good luck Roy

Best wishes, hope the therapy is effective.

I have hair on most of the top of my head, but it's a lot thinner than it used to be.....In some places I'd have to say it approaches a (shudder) combover, though I have it cut and comb it same as always.

I get sun stripes when I forget to use the sun screen on top...

I started wearing bandanas under my helmet when lack of hair meant I was getting sunburn through the helmet slots. I found that a secondary advantage is that I no longer get any sweat coming off my forehead into my eyes, no matter how hot the day or how hard the race.

I’ve been using full coverage head sweats of various types for 10 years or so. Not really worried about my head, it’s my arms and legs from a period growing up when I was a swimmer, lifeguard, etc... it’s that stuff that can come back to bite you.

lrzipris, good to hear you're taking it in stride, that might be the best lesson. Keep on truckin.

I've been a Headsweats fan for many years. For the last few years, I've been riding with arm coolers in good weather, and arm warmers otherwise.

Irzipris, good luck with the treatments.

Yes, cover your noggins but don't forget that the sun is an equal-opportunity provider of UV rays for your nose/arms/neck/thighs/knees/legs also.

Ps. Good idea sanrensho.

I guess I'm lucky

I still have as much hair as I always did, though it's become extremely "blond" over the years.

I too started wearing arm coolers, not only when cycling but also when I referee soccer and umpire baseball. But there is always a tension between ventilation and coverage, especially during the height of the summer. I guess I'll have to add a head cover of some sort, but I'll miss those oval sunburn patches on my scalp.
