"was not old infrastructure it was recent upgrades"

There is that...

They kept reporting that section had a max speed of 79MPH. Looking at the turn before the tracks went over I5 I thought 80? With a turn?

Turns out the max was 30 on the turn and he was doing 81. My vote is on texting at the helm.

Whatever happen to Positive Train Control?

There's a requirement for all passenger trains to be fully auto by 2018. This is a new track so should have the control elements. Amtrak claimed all their trains have the corresponding control device already. Some technical foobar?

(ok, I'm working from memory. But this was highlighted when a Metro North train derailed a year or so ago)

The rule is...

...that people have to die before the railroads will implement PTC on a given line.

Thank goodness private industry will now have the means to implement their plans to improve safety, increase research and development, raise wages, increase benefits, hire more workers, and bring assets held in foreign lands home. </political sarcasm>

20 Seconds, "Do you plan to plan to increase investment..?" Show of hands YouTube clip from the WSJ hosted 'CEO Council' with Gary Cohn, DJT's Director of the National Economic Council.

Look how anxious Gary Cohn is, to the right.

PTC

PTC requirements keep slipping, driven by both public systems (not enough taxpayer money to make those investments) and private freight companies (next quarter profits put at risk).

During the 3 years since the original deadline (2015), how many derailment and how many deaths?

(I think right now the death toll is around 10? That's not counting the injuries and property damages. How much does THAT cost? How shortsighted can people be?)

At the end of the day, we need to develop a culture that prizes dedication to the job and professionalism at every level. There were two people in the engineer's compartment - this was not an instance of someone falling asleep at the controls. Someone was not paying attention to their job.

Or someone being asked to do too many tasks at the same time?

"There were two people in the engineer's compartment"

The one guy was teaching the other role wise. Teaching the new guy how to crash you might say.

And then there is this:

President Trump was in a celebratory mood on Friday night and told a group of his wealthy friends, “You all just got a lot richer” after he signed the tax cuts into law. Trump reportedly uttered the words to a group of friends who were having dinner nearby at Mar-a-Lago.

@ $200k plus to join $14k per year.

#DT_Translation: Now you will have to pay $375k to join and $28k per year to maintain.

[insert snickering Muttley gif]
