Giro 2018
It`s official,,,The Giro starts on Friday, May 4th with a 10 km. time trial in Jerusalem, and then 2 road stages. They avoided the problem of riding on a Saturday in Jerusalem by having the opening stage on a Friday. Unfortunately, the 2 other stages are relatively flat for the sprinters with no real challenging climbs. Nothing in my neck of the woods, but plan to take a closer look at the route and decide where to catch Stage 2 & 3.

If this is anything like...
...the other races in the Middle East, you should have little competition for your pick of the best viewing spots. ;-)

Isreal....
.. is very different culturally then the other mideast countries you are referencing.
There is a large amateur cycling scene, there is a fairly large Mt Bike stage race and Gran Fondo type rides etc...

The second road stage is between Beer Sheva and Eilat, and between those two cities there is sweet f.a....desert. That is probably the reason they choose it as closing the roads there during the week effects about 4 people. There will probably be more camels than spectators along most of the route. As for the other two days, while it won`t be like Europe, it definitely will rival the Tour of Utah which I saw some of last month or so. Speaking of Utah, the Israel Cycling Academy Team road there. As hanoch said, we have an active cycling community, with off road being more popular than road cycling.

Looks like 3 stages, opening TT and 2 sprint stages.
If any one is interested, Sagan skipped the Worlds TTT. But is supposed to defend the Jersey in the Road Race. Press indicates he got a throat bug courtesy of Canada post Grand Prix de Quebec and then Grand Prix de Montreal recently.

How fast can camels run?
Marc, perhaps you could rent one of these venerable "ships of the desert" and pace along with the peloton for a while. That's bound to generate some comments from Phil, Paul, Christian & Bobke! If you do it, be sure to wear riding kit and a helmet, preferable aero. ;-)

Our French-Canadian bugs (and girls) are known to wreak havoc on unsuspecting Europeans and Americans...
