But Glen was playing by 1950 or earlier...

I saw Glen Campbell in his Las Vegas show in 1976, and he was ripping out those guitar solos.

True. But he his playing pieces written hundreds of years ago -most challenging scores that take a violinist years to master. To perform with that speed, precision, and control with fingers instead of a bow, exceeds shredding - putting him in the virtuoso class.

Shredding
I can't evaluate relative shredding merits, but in general guitar wizardry terms, it's perhaps instructive that apparently Eddie Van Halen wanted to set up a lesson with Glen. I remember Glen from Shindig and Hullabaloo in the '60s, where they had him shake his blonde hair, presumably to look like the British Invasion bands. A hugely talented and complex guy. I found this interview with his pal Alice Cooper interesting:

Shreds
For all the adulation that GK might deserve, those who think his guitar solos somehow broke ground or stand head and shoulders above those of his time, listening to a little Les Paul or Chet Atkins will set you straight. I forget if it was Chester or Lester who did Stars and Stripes Forever (all parts?) but it was a sight/sound to behold.

Well breaking ground is a totally different thing I guess. Glen was an axeman and performing multi instrument player with chops, and more chops.
Seems Les Paul used delay repeats / bounceback, where Chet was a 4/4 quarter note kind of guy. And Glen was an early adopter of employing triplets for his 'shredding' runs.
Musically Glen originated very little, where especially Chet created what could certainly be considered ground breaking. Les Paul's style did/does nothing for me frankly. But he was a technical designer that certainly is considered ground breaking in terms of recording music from my knowledge. If we are counter pointing and espousing / opinioning..

Live alive
I've seen Chester and Lester live and I can tell you their skills were more than obvious and did not require studio tricks. I'm not saying GK was not a great player, just that there were others that came before with lots of skills too.

"Chester and Lester"
You can bet GC took more than a little from them.
And even I have by proxy certainly, especially after a certain point.
