Weirdest birds ever?

Ok, I think they are birds.

For four nights in a row, the noises coming from my wooded backyard ravine corridor have been odd. Sounds like two birds communicating, but the only thing is that they don't sound anything alike!

One sounds a very high-pitched squeak/whistle monotone that lasts for one second. It tapers off slightly as it ends.
Often as not this is followed by a gruff, gagging screech or three, of perhaps slightly longer duration.
Really weird. The whistle one sounds like a whistle, and the screech one is a little scary to be honest, like something that might fit into a horror movie.
The sounds move around, I'm getting the stereo effect from adjacent wall's windows, so I think it has to be birds.
They've been sounding off like clockwork past sundown, yet I've never heard either one before. This evening the neighbor's dog took note and barked angrily in reply.
I guess these have perhaps migrated from their native area, maybe a little off their usual path due to our having had a record-rainy winter(?).

Any guesses what these are? Some kind of owls maybe?

How about:
Some parrots live past 80.
Someone bought two beautiful parrots around when Sgt. Peppers came out.
Time moved on, children, retirement, the inevitable.
An heir says to their spouse: "I grew up hearing those two going at it. It wasn't until college when I realized why no one would come to my sleepovers twice. There's no way I'm going to spend the rest of my life with that racket."

Animal control will eventually intervene, Keep your eye on the paper when the music stops, the poor dog isn't the only one suffering. Isn't there a canyon near SF with a feral parrot population?

Someone made a film about them that I saw about a decade ago: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0424565/

Coit Tower

The celebrated parrots are around Coit Tower in SF. There may be other populations but they are the ones that have been the subject of documentaries.

SF's about 130 miles away, but since I haven't seen these things yet I suppose they could be parrots.

I thought of owls since they're only making their appearance known after dark.

I am picturing Burt Reynolds in the movie 'The End' waking up in the loony bin to bird song. Which is another patient outside doing bird imitations.

Maybe it is one of your neighbors. ;)

There are some birds where the two genders make different sounds. For example, the Nazca Booby, where the female honks and the male whistles

Bingo, that sounds like what I suspected, after ruling out some sort of hoax.

The birds seem to have moved on, else they are beyond their ritual and now building a nest and a family.

Apologies in advance

Parkin describes males whistling at honkin' Boobies.
