Crap
Really sorry to hear that. I have a fake hip, but it was arthritis and I dunno about fractures. Heal well!

Ouch! Hope you recover fast!

Training crits can be very dangerous. Some big bike events also.

Well... fookin sheit!
I was wondering why that email took an extra day to get replied to. I had a thought of complications in the side of my head hoping not...
Exactly why the thought of hitting the tarmac scares me so much.
Age; 20s=2 bounces
Age; 30s= 1-1/2 bounces brusing
Age; 40s=1 to no bounces/splat, hematoma..
Age 50s= plant and crack. Or bounce bounce crack crack
Age 60s=dunno yet. death and destruction? which order?
I'll be 58 May 7th so approaching the next unknown...
I did a good right hip plant when I stepped on the side of my foot from about 7-8" higher than I usually stand... One day these little ones may well be a fracture...

Well, ain't that some shit. I have to hope there is no displacement of the bone. If not it should heal quickly.
Jeannie just said, "Hey, at least he got a good selfie out of it!" ;)
Crazy riders is why I decided I would not do my normal cross state ride this year. The Alzheimer's Ride to Remember has gotten to big with way to many inexperienced riders. I saw way to much skin and carbon on the road last year for my tastes. Back to my solo hammer rides, rides with Matt (a local who has the legs of an ex-pro) and Jeannie. All are safer bets.

Bones heal same rate... my non displaced tib fib did not heal any faster. In fact surgery may actually make heal faster due to being able to put load sooner I think.. added support if plates rods are used etc.
I learned one thing. Bigger bones bigger pain. I hope not for Walter... but not high confidence there. Day 3-4 was what seemed like the start or the pain manifesto as I recall.. :0

dont know yet!
i got separated from my bike in the melee, never saw it post-crash from my vantage point on the asphalt.
a teammate loaded into my car for me, later he said it wasnt too bad -- just a taco'd front wheel. its still in the trunk, way to difficult to get out there to even eyeball the situation. it can wait. it was a beefy C50, not some fly-weight, so i'm thinking it'll be OK-ish.

such a bummer
bad luck, really.
everyone was riding well, nobody in the bunch was squirrely, everthing was smooth. heck, everyone else that went down in the pile-up dusted off and went about their days with road-rash being the main outcome.
almost think it woulda been better to not brake at all going into this crash, so i might have carried forward more and landed on top of something/someone. of course, it all happens in the blink of an eye and it's not like you're choosing amongts alternatives. it's pure reaction, if you can manage that.

Sorry to hear about the crash and especially broken bone. What is the expected healing time?
I broke my femur in '03 and have been paying for it ever since (riding complications).

recuperation measured in weeks
i'm getting up to ~8 weeks estimate to be really healed. but we'll see -- as always, depends on the individual situation.
in addition to the pelvic fracture, i tore the hell out of my groin muscles/tissue on both legs and along with my lower abs. which mean i cant really lift my legs at all, cant do anything that causes any muscle tension across my core or involves activating those muscle groups at all.
using the walker, i have to drag my feet across the floor for each step. the moment i try to lift a knee it loads up groin/flexors ... it's a non-starter. even rolling over on the sofa requires my wife to lift and move my legs for me. i'm still on the sofa because i cant raise a leg to go up the stairs, either!
ahhhh, good times.
in addition to painkillers, my doc has prescribed for me a nasal spray that helps bones heal...seriously! it's something normally used for osteoporosis, but apparently it also accelerates bones healing/stitching from fractures. so we'll see.

It generally takes a lot longer for muscles to heal than bone. Good luck with that.

Fracture: I was really hoping you weren't going to pay a higher price than what you posted Saturday.
Twenty years from now you'll be in great health, outstanding fitness and look back at this as simple youthful indiscretion.
Get well soon

"using the walker, i have to drag my feet across the floor for each step."
Trying to imaging the time line / window of getting to the standing position in front of said walker.. I recall it took me about 10 minutes to get up and get to the toilet when I did my tail bone landing back when after a trip through the air.
Continued well wishes for a speedy recovery!!

ohhhman
My shoulder and ribs were vibrating in sympathy. Take it one day at a time. think only of today each day will get better. six months from now you will be able to look back but for now only be mindful of the present and think positive thoughts.

I think you were on the rivet based on your HR, that contributed to the wreck. Your brain was not firing on all cylinders due to your legs sucking up the O2.

what HR trace are you reading?
look at the HR trace...we were soft-pedaling for quite a bit before the end, the HR trending downward...it was almost 20bpm *lower* than the peak HR earlier that lap...just about the lowest HR in the race since the start!
just before the pile-up, our power-output was quite modest and our speed had dropped from the mid 20s down to 18 and had only just crept back up to the low 20s. it was actually in a lull in the pace that it happened.
it all happened so fast i'm trying to piece it back together.
we were just entering a right-hand turn when 2-3 guys go down in the pack right in front of me. the guy immediately to my left *just* misses the pile up, he said he avoided someone's head by 2", got whacked by a flying bike on the way by, didnt hit anything and managed to stay up. this is all happening in a tightly packed bunch spanning milliseconds, i'm already full-on the binders, so i really have not many choices remaining.
i recall running into the guys in the pile-up, and then things going really crazy when i get hit from behind. i *think* the combination of my remaining forward momentum, plus the bike stopping suddenly created a pivot, plus the helpful shove from behind served to eject me over the top of the pile. then i impacted the ground with my left side -- based on my injuries i think it was elbow, face, hip, back -- in that order. at some point a spinning wheel "rug-burned" my nose, too.
i'm guessing the guy that hit me from behind transferred all of his energy to me and ended up relatively unscathed. gee, at least a "thanks, dude" should be in order, eh?! ;-)

Your crash was about 1 mile after you marked the elevated HR. Even if your HR had come down a few beats your brain was still in O2 debt.
Heck my personality changes, along with my coordination if I go hard to long. I get more grumpy than usual etc. Maybe the real me comes out. :)

moar pictures!
not much to look at, but a fractured inferior-ramus really affects the function of your legs! its the attachment point for the gracillis and adductor-magnus muscles and a few others. the docs tell me there's another fracture in the superior-ramus, but i cant for the life of me see it -- 1 fracture is enough!
also upgraded my "wheels" with some cargo-carrying capability.
