You're so very wrong.
It's not even so much the beauty of the icicles. It's the cold crisp winter that makes us appreciate the summer (and spring, and fall) a whole lot more!
Many of us easterners live here because we like it. So, far from "breaking our heart" to hear your tale of lawn mowing in February, I for one, feel sorry for your missing out on the ebb and flow of life on earth. If I want constant temperature that much, I might as well envy a tomato plant living in a greenhouse!
This, from someone who lived 3 years in San Francisco and found the lack of winter... soul numbing!

This is a private chat room where all the participants happen to ride bike, sometimes.
Practically everyone here has a life besides biking. So unlike your take of a typical cycling forum, where the participants moan about the lack of cycling opportunity in the winter, we just happily move on to our "winter lifestyle", whether its skiing or photography, or just relax to appreciate the quieter & slower pace!

Winter lifestyle
I never knew my winter lifestyle would be spent behind a snow blower. Lord, wrestling with that thing through heavy snow is almost as bad as shoveling. But it does allow me to throw the snow further. I've reached the point where I can't hurl the snow far enough by shovel to clear the rising banks alongside my sidewalk and driveway.

The fun goes on
-12F this am, no problem, my dogs still demand their walk so off we go. Up to about 30 by afternoon. A couple inches snow tonight, then up to 40 tomorrow, then back to -12 Monday night. Actually I love this stuff.
Lately I've been doing my virtual riding around Ottowa, being tortured by Smelly and the Ride with Rendall boys. The Gran Fondo Training Plan is definitely ramping up. The beloved 2x20 @ ftp tomorrow.
Good thing I'm on this program, not sure the road bike tires will touch asphalt anytime soon.

Did the base tempo Majorica yesterday (the easy part skipping the climb) a a warmup to the 100% ttt for an hour... then Stelvio today. Legs are done, taking tomorrow off...4-7 here tonight, can't get the tractor started and its in front of the hayloft door, where I need to have 100 bales thrown on tues-fun times.

That's a tough agenda. I also did an hour of the ttt today, but throttled back to 82% so it was actually a recovery ride. A tough one was 4x8@105% ftp Friday, get 5x8 of the same next week before another godforsaken ftp test.
I don't have a tractor to start but I hope my chainsaw starts tomorrow so I can cut up a tree that fell across my fence. Good luck with the hay. Are you a gentleman farmer now?

Intervals
4 intervals of 8 minutes each. All the intervals so far have been 8, 10 or 20 minutes. Did 2 of 20 minutes @ftp this am, felt pretty good, think my ftp is a bit higher now. Shorter intervals come later. I think Smelly's plan is pretty effective (of course I'm starting from nowhere).

Powder day!
10" overnight at Stratton, where I "happened" to be staying with a friend, after a day of back country xc skiing on the Catamount trail on Saturday.
I know it's going to be great when I brush the powder off the car easily, fluffy light snow. One of those rare east coast true powder day today.
Too god damn many people though. Much of the powder were gone within a couple hours. The only powder left were either in the trees or on the bumps. Not complaining, mind you. Beggar can't be chooser.
Made sweeter when the lift ticket was half off! :D

Linda and I saw the same thing at Town Neck in Sandwich last weekend. There was a line of broken ice ~200 yards offshore and slushy waves breaking on the beach. We took a drive down to Buzzards Bay and most of it was frozen solid.

Great Lakes slurpees
Actually those slurpee waves are reasonably common on the Great Lakes. I've seen lots of them over the years. A few degrees colder to create them with the salty ocean, but they look the same regardless of whether fresh or salt water.

March is typically the snowiest month. This is when I really crank up my skiing. :D
Except those 3-5" at the door step part, that is. The snow gets in the way of going to the skiing hills.

We got about 6 inches out of this one. But it's sunny this morning, and the temp was above freezing by 9:00. So there is a light at the end of the tunnel, I think.
April, if March turns out to be snowier than January or February this year, I may shoot myself.
