Personally, given the following Wiki excerpt, I prefer Erik Erikson's take.

Christmas with the penguins - Nice! I took that trip with National Geographic a few years ago and it's still the best trip we've ever taken.
Mark my words - you're going down for the penguins, but you will want to return for the ice.
I now have a penguin photo as my desktop background. I would love to go back.
We lucked out and had relatively calm waters on Drake's Passage both ways. May you have the same.

We did the Galapagos in June of this year, on the National Geographic Islander. That's the smaller ship, a catamaran that takes only 48 people. Small group, great crew, lots of rich food. Very busy and regimented, because there's so much to do in so little time, so one must be ready to hop to it when schedules demand, if you want to do things. But it's worth it.
Good traveling companions for the most part, and informative naturalists, and the boat is very luxurious. The wildlife is unique. One could go on and on. Short version is; do it.
When did you last swim in a tropical ocean with sea lions and penguins?
We had to stay fairly near home for many years owing to family obligations, and then I was nearly killed in a bicycling accident, and I turned 67 today, so we're doing this stuff while we still can. The house can wait another year to get painted.
p.s on the issue of cruising itself, it's entirely informal. This is a cruise for doing stuff not dressing up.
