Cortizone shots anyone?

Cortizone shots anyone?

Anyone had those at one time or another and notice any side effects?

I've seen it mentioned the most with competition athletes. If they had a minor injury but still able to compete, they get a shot to be at 100%. So it seems it's relatively harmless. Emphasis on the "relatively" part, I suppose.

I had two of these shots the last 3 months, to deal with my shoulder issue. My doctor(s)' attitudes are these are rather harmless, and pretty much didn't bother to discuss it.

I've been riding like gangbuster the last 2 months. I've had knee pain past 2 seasons but it's very much gone now. 2 weeks ago, I climbed a pitch I walked last year. Since nothing changed in my riding, I'm starting to wonder if it's the cortizone.

April's Juiced!

Never had one, but it calls to mind an amusing incident 34 years ago when I had a shoulder impingement. The ortho (who later was the longtime head doc for the US Women Soccer Team) said I could have an injection, but "it would be like trying to kill a mosquito with a howitzer."

FWIW, IME many have them for pain, and the relief seems usually temporary.

But glad you're flying!

flying...

Only trouble is, the higher one flies, the longer one comes down!

What happens when the cortizone effect passes?

Not to mention the other, less pleasant side effects that might lurk around the body...

BTW, is it on the ban substance list?

I have had enough of these shots to the point where I don't have them anymore as they only provide temporary relief, usually a month or two.
In addition, my doc cautioned there can be unwanted side effects from repeated cortisone injections that can cause softening of the bone and cartilage making further injury potentially more likely.
I take a 75mg Voltaren (generic is Diclofenac and cheap) twice a day that keeps my inflammation in check except for an upcoming total knee resurfacing.

Not sure it's got anything to do with "enough, to the point of..."

My doctors expect the relief to last only a month, not even two. And that's without assuming I had any in the past.

That statement begs the question, why would you subject yourself to the cost, inconvenience, and risk to have a treatment that provides only "a month" of relief when you can only have three of these shots a year per standard of care?

"why would you subject yourself"

Because it makes you feel 25 years old for a while, that's why.

Cost? What cost? Same goes with inconvenience. There's little to none of either.

Now risk, that's WHAT I WAS ASKING in this thread to begin with!!! Anyone know what the risks are??? Hello???

I haven't heard the "3 times a year" part from my doctor. Is that associated with some risk? What are they? At what dosage?

To Sparky, no, it does no such thing. It takes some of the pain away if you're a chronic pain sufferer. But not all of us are suffering chronic pain. (At least I didn't think I was until I had the injection. Some minor pain that I've been living with and didn't think much of are suddenly gone!)

you are speaking for yourself. I am speaking for 3 people which claimed this.

So I am guessing it does no such thing for you. Not knowing what dose you or they were given, that is all I got.

OK, they must be on some higher dose than what I got.

When I used to get them for poison ivy, I've heard people say it made them "jumpy" but not in a positive way that one can benefit from.

I hope no one will confuse andro- or anabolic steroids with these corticosteroids such as Cortizone or Prednisone.

These corticosteroids are powerful miracle drugs though for the patients that need them.

I somewhat agree with the suggestion that they can make one feel younger, either with respect to their prescribed purpose or in the way that they can dramatically reduce the sort of post-ride soreness that otherwise might make it difficult for one to walk briskly down stairs post-ride.

The side-effects of corticosteroids are many as the dosage increases.
Things like acne, personality "weirdness", weight gain, stomach irritation, reduced immunity and insomnia are some of the ones to watch out for, even at medium dosages, but where lower dosages are effective, there may be no side effects at all.

The body also may become dependent on these drugs, as too rapid of a tapering off can cause chemical imbalance sufficient to cause illness or strong recurrence of any symptoms for which the drug was prescribed.
