Helmets, if you choose
So I broke down and replaced my old helmet with a now classic Atmos, $130 via an Amazon seller.
My impressions, yep I can feel the wind in my hair, wow, like nothing I have ever used before. It will be a vast improvement for my hot summers here.
Down side? Yep, the damn thing is noisy, I mean it has airflow that you can hear. Much more so than any helmet I have used before.
I was smart this time, I got a white one. That should help in the heat too.
I can't imagine using one of the new aero road race buckets. They look like microwave ovens for your brain.

I always get my helmets these days with a visor, which normally means choosing an MTB model. I find a visor is good if you're riding into the sun, and also when riding in the rain.

visor
I also find the visor to be the best place to mount a mirror (I use a TAL with the spoke shortened and bolted to the visor). The frames on my glasses are just too skinny for that. Currently using a NOS Bell Citi.

With a visor, I can't see were I am going.

Agreed
For me, they just get in the way on the road. I do use one offroad at times, though these days I generally wear my road helmet because it fits better with a hat underneath.

I have a visor on the helmet I use in the rain with a waterproof cover. It keeps the water off of my glasses. and makes riding more comfortable. For good weather I don't particularly like them.
As to hats under helmets, I've been using Headsweat's Skullcaps for the past few years. They similar to their "Pirate" doo-rags but without the tail. They serve three purposes:
1) Keep sweat from running down into my eyes.
2) keep the sun off the top of my head, a job hair used to do but not so much anymore.
3) Protect me from bugs that get through the helmet vents. Having been stung and bitten a couple of times before I could get the helmet off, this is a big advantage.

Visor
I also found visor gets in the way of looking ahead, even though I already sitting more upright than the "typical" road position (bar slightly higher than seat, instead of 1-2" below). I would have to tilt my head further back (up) to see under the visor. Than my neck complains...

Butt Ugly
To me those aero helmets are just plain ugly, and I agree with you that they look hot as well.
I just picked up a Catlike Mixano which is plenty breezy as well as stylish.

Giro Prolight for me. Not sure why they discontinued the model. Amazingly light and the ballcap-like retention system works great.

Noise abatement
Erik it might be that the noise is from the straps and not from the helmet itself. I've found that if you give the front strap a full twist (rethread the straps) it cuts the strap noise significantly.

strap noise
concur with kerry. i actually picked up some retrofit "spoilers" that affix to the strap in front of your ears, called slipstreamz. they were kinda mickey mouse for fitment, but they did help as advertized. never moved them over from my atmos to my current specialized.
one of these days i'm gonna fab up my own version out of some PVC or something, i have some ideas to improve them.

Giro Prolight for me too.
Elaine got it for me after someone walked off with my Giro Pneumo. I left it on the ground in the front yard after a ride. Long dead end street. Still waiting to see some kid on the block wearing it one day... One of the few things I splurged and paid retail too! Seves me right. ;O

I got a Giro too, though a lesser one, since I am not hitting the road these days. But I like the Giro fit a bit better than others, and have a certain loyalty since I'm pretty sure my last Giro is partly responsible for my not being dead.

I got a mid/higher end Bell Helmet for MTB, and I gotta say the Giros disappear on my head better.
The Prolight I forget I have it on after 5 minutes.

I find that the front of the visor in my field of vision is pretty much co-incident with the frame of my sunglasses, so the visor hardly obstructs the view at all. I'm certainly not conscious of it doing so. But I do have my handlebars set at much the same height as the saddle, so I'm not leaning all that much forward unless I'm on the drops.

There are visors and there are visors. I just ordered one of these for my stoker:
Giro Reverb.

I know that helmet!
That's the "every day" helmet of Matt Feiner, owner of one of the best bike shops in the country (New Haven's own Devil's Gear). They sell a lot of those.

That lid looks to be very hot for southern AZ.

We'll have to see if it has adequate ventilation. But it seems quite similar to what she is wearing right now, an original Giro Air Attack. The new Air Attack is ridiculously priced.
