I'm certainly glad I don't have to pay for his rear tires.

Like someone would carry that big shop multi tool, LOL.
Camera man must have had that in his gear. ;)

Yeah
I've climbed it on a properly geared bike :)
Went and did La Marmotte one year. Telegraphe is "easy". The complete Galibier is tough, especially in the heat of summer.

New one on me
I've done some very moderate descending on a fixed gear, and I was wondering how he got down. Haven't seen that rear wheel drift move before (and I won't be trying it at home).

There were a lot of takes. As he slid his tire to brake I noted at times 3-4 skids already inthe the road.
I saw the tool in his center pocket in early shots but only an idiot would opt for that instead of a cool tool or the likes.
He may have ridden up and down but not in the "spiritual" sense the film portrayed.

Keep in mind...
...that the purpose was to make a movie and create dramatic effect; it's not exactly a documentary. In that regard, they succeeded.
Frankly, I question whether he was actually able to ride that large of a gear up the whole thing or not. He also wants us to believe that he did the entire climb without drinking anything. As for the tire change and tool, he obviously had a film car with him and I imagine that they carried his tools and spares, and probably a water bottle as well.
It's an interesting and entertaining film and what's shown is an achievement in and of itself. However, I not taking it at face value until unless and until I see the entire uninterrupted footage.
