OT: Shattered iPhone
I know many of you use iPhones of the various numbers. Well a few weeks back I had mine slide off the hood of my SUV and shatter, it still worked but was unreadable and a cut hazard to say the least.
I changed out the digitizer and glass unit on my 4. It was an intricate fix but doable by most folks who frequent here. The parts and tools were less than $60 from icracked.com via amazon. I can attest to the quality of the kit and would do it again in a heartbeat.
I did not to want rehack my contract or pay the fees to activate a new phone. It all worked out in my favor.

That's good to know
I once had that happen to an older phone (years back). Since my contract had already expired, I could get a new one for free. The only problem being they've "upgraded" that model to a larger phone which I didn't feel like carrying in my pocket.
But I hadn't thought of replacing the screen as a cheap fix. So I reluctantly accepted the larger one.
So if there's ever a next time, I now know I have more options.

Well done. I heard a report on the radio yesterday saying that since the introduction of the iphone Americans have spent 6 billion dollars repairing broken ones.

Bustication
I have a Nokia 820 and I have begun fearing the need to replace the screen. I've bounced it off the basement floor a couple of times. Fortunately for me, the case and battery are removable, and the times I've dropped it, the phone has broken apart into three pieces, apparently absorbing enough energy that the screen hasn't shattered. Still and all, there are times when I wish the case had a "friction patch," or that I was smart enough not to put it into my shirt pocket...

I got a short camera lanyard on my Samsung. It has been instrumental on a few occasions. At least slowing the rate of descent. ;O Having the HD service Rugy Pro doesn't hurt either. You don't even need a encapsulation cover on it.

Erik, do you think an iPad digitizer would be easier or harder to replace? My daughter is on her 2nd cracked iPad screen. #kids...these...days
I briefly considered getting a digitizer from ebay and doing it myself, but needed the 1st repair in a hurry.

I bet via icracked instructions and videos you could fix her iPad. I sure would give it a shot. The instructions were some of the best I have ever seen produced for any form of repair. They even have spots to place the parts and screws as you remove them. I put a piece of double stick scotch tape on the placement locations so the tiny screws would not get mixed up or roll away. Some of the iPhone screws are in the watch size category so I felt it was a prudent move.
I have pics of the repair if someone wants to host them for a bit.

That will work. Sorry about the crappy focus on the included tool kit. I must have missed the macro setting on the camera.
Camera is a new high end Canon pas. It takes some great photos, with a true 35x optical zoom and image stabilization. Good low light performance too. I shelved a DSLR after getting it.
I would like to point out that some of the pictures were taken with the phone, before and after the repair. It was fully functional after the drop check, only the screen was shattered. It should be pretty obvious which ones.

Actually, the toenails were sporting the Mr. Hanky motif, I liked it.
OK, I am done...
