Guitarist that he is, how about:

"Sparky Spark and the Derailleur Destroyers"

"I bust alone

I don't bust with nobody else

And when I bust alone

I prefer to be by myself"

I'll stop now.

Well, at least I got a 24 mile ride in, was shooting for 60. I think, looking at the mess' that the front/leading outer plate of a link popped off the pin and caught on the front outer DR cage and pulled the DR into the large chain ring. DR still stuck on the chain ring.
It got spun in the seat tube 60-70^ as well.

Elaine luckily just got out of work soon after and headed my way to rescue. Even if I had my Alien with the chain tool, I do not think I would have got rolling. Unless I could have removed the front DR and had it stay on a ring up front. I would have tried.

I am going to make sure I have a link and some more tools with me being I am shooting for distances a few hours from home. ;) Been doing 20-30 milers so long the thought had not occurred to me. ;)

Here's what you need.

Sparky, if you have one of these, breaking a chain on your next ride will be the least of your problems:

it was the Bridgestone. I bet if it was the carbon Roubaix that may well have taken out the ST/Frame...

Change the thing on occasion. I am nutty about chains. I broke one once on a MTB. I learned my lesson. OUCH!!!!!!!

The chain was like a 32nd stretched, so I used it again. Just might be the site of a reused pin. I may
rethink ever doing that again.

I managed to salvage the front DR. It bent flat and straight pretty easily to my surprise. The little plastic spacer was gone. Made a new metal one out of the parts bin, grind, drill, de-burr, yadi...

If that was a DA derailleur it would have snapped. [Ask how I know]. ;) The metal is much more brittle on the expensive ones to make them double digit weight. ;)

Good think I stopped pedaliing...

Good Idea

If that's what you did then no wonder it broke. It's not for nothing that every current chain makes says "don't reuse a standard pin".

Technically, only one end of the pin was reused, kinda sorta. ;)

I kid, but I won't do it again for sure not. I could of had a good crash and burn as a result....

Pin head

AFIK you can only re-use pins on 8s and lower chains. Tolerances got too tight and clearances too small after that. And maybe it was 7s and below. I never ran 8s but with the jump to 9s it was made clear that the old school methods of chain pin re-use were over.

8's Too

Even 8-speed chains shouldn't have the pins reused. Shimano 8-speed chains come with their special joining pins and SRAM introduced their master link beginning at 8-speed.

Never reuse chain pins. That has been the case since the 90s. It is not worth the risk.

I used a master SRAM master link on a 9 speed DA chain for the length of the life of the chain. Not supposed to do that either according to Shimano IIRC.

Ditto on the 9speed. 10spd won't work though. Never reuse the pin, I never said not to reuse a SRAM ML on 9spd chains.

All I had was some 8 speed master links, although that would have worked yesterday if I actually had one with me. One is going in my seat bag which is going back on. I had been doing Jersey pockets only for a while...

So no 10 speed master link with Shimano is good Erik ? I do have 2 of those in my bins.

KMC and Wipperman 10-speed master links work fine with Shimano 10-speed chains. SRAM's 10-speed master link is a too tight fit on Shimano chains.

SRAM's 8 and 9-speed master links do work on the same nominal width Shimano chains. [/quote]
