Anyone try slotting a hub?

Remember that odd hub I posted about? Well I found a proper replacement and I'm getting ready to try to rebuild the wheel. The hub specs are a close enough match that it looks like I can reuse the spokes (some nicer DT bladed spokes), but it would require the hub to be slotted (which it unfortunately isn't).

Anyone here try to slot a hub before? The hub was relatively cheap ($12 used) so if I bunge it up I'm not too worried, so I thought I might give it a try. It looks like folks have either used a jewelers saw, narrow dremel, or a drill to slot the hub with varying degrees of success.

Thoughts? Thanks

I would just be afraid to put stress risers on the wrong axes. [had to look up plural of axis ;)] I think I read some 'how to' text on the net though...

Seems like just getting oval spoke or blades with max x-section under 2mm. Assuming 2mm holes in hub.
But will the wheel be stiff enough with 15 ga. ovals?

It would concern me for radial lacing even more. Not to mention do you know for sure the hub is forged ? I think that would matter also.

I've built tandem racing wheels with CX-Ray spokes and had zero problems with them. Built 3-cross though, not radial.

Just don't touch any of the material outboard of the original holes and let us know how it goes . . .

I am thinking the slot may be best 180^ from the spoke path/direction what ever the spoke pattern chosen.

I think, especially with radial spokes, you want as much beef between the holes as possible. Slotting the holes radially might actually reduce the stress risers at the sides of the holes.

Wonder what Brandt would say? ;)

A google image search for Dura Ace Slotted hubs shows the 'slot' in fact @ 6 o'clock inboard.

I have a pre-slotted Dura-Ace front hub that I used for building a time trial wheel, and the slots are cut radially inwards from the spoke holes.
