Well not all good

Just out walking the dog up the road and a plow took out a bank of mailboxes, including mine. Fortunately a handy neighbor scooped up the remains and sez he can put it back together after the storm lets up. No mail today anyway, PO closed (not keeping their appointed rounds, obviously). Road is not drivable for normal cars, not going anywhere today. Not snowing much now but pretty windy.

Well.

There's no road in front of our house anymore. Tess and I couldn't find anything outside, so we spent about three hours this morning trying to shovel out just so we could get to the street, which is about 2' under and so far unplowed. Wow. Talk about beltlines!

Having to shovel a spot, and path to that spot for your dog to do his biz, I remember that too well...

Stay safe up there...

It must be so beautiful though...

Looks like Andy is the winner!

We had 30", give or take, in Manchester. Local news shows listed 36" for Hamden.

I'm exhausted. I spent five hours snow blowing and shoveling. But the camaraderie of the Brotherhood of the Shovel was great. Everyone was out helping as needed.

I measured 28-29 inches at several undrifted spots here in Glastonbury (about 5 miles from Pat, 25 from Andy). My son and I shoveled for 4 hours, enough to be able to get the car out if necessary (the road is pretty well plowed -- the bank behind the car was over 4' high). Another 3 hours tomorrow should get the whole driveway open.

It's about time for the 5:00 o'clock medication. The martini glasses are chillin'

In retrospective of Nemo vs, Sandy, having 30 inches of snow in the driveway is immensely easier to deal with then 4 ft of ocean in the living room. Not that I had either, thank God !.

Just to be contrarian, I went out to join today's usual 8AM suffer-fest-40 up into the hills, and at only a dry, sunny 36-degrees, no one showed.
I put in 25 minutes of local steeps before the fingers were chillin, now back in my chair with a mug of decaf.

Oh, the memories that all your pictures re-kindle.
I kinda miss earning quik money shoveling snow, while skipping school, and of riding in the snow from town to town on a Bendix two-speed Yamaha Moto-Bike.
I don't much miss the crunchy mess during the days and weeks after.

Good day after

I think we just missed the brunt of the storm. Portland (about 12 miles South) reported a record 32", in actuality I don't think we had more than 16-18 (which is plenty of course).

Other than closing the office a few hours early Friday, and not going anywhere over the weekend, really very little inconvenience. The snow was so light that cleanup was easy. Great snowshoeing today. Hope it holds.

That is one way to phrase it, another might be "not nearly too much" ;)

Snopocalypse Day 3

Supplies running short; ran out of Downton Abbey episodes last night. Still no sign of rescue.

I'm exhausted... from skiing 2 days in a row for the first time this season! :D

The advantage of living in a large condo complex means we got private plows working all night clearing roads and drives. Since we only got 5-6"", it's just a "normal storm" for this area. So road in the complex were bone dry and clear sailing. But as soon as I got out of the complex, the roads were in much worse shape, still lots of snow & ice, though passable.

Driving on I-84 Saturday morning was spooky...being the only car on it for miles. It didn't occur to me right away the section I was on was on the west side of CT, which was still under a travel ban at the time! No wonder there were no other cars on the road!

Not having other cars around also means the road surface still had a thin layer of ice/snow left over by the plow. So no going over the speed limit. Though once I cross to the west side of Hudson, the roads were clear by 9am.

Even though MA got more snow, the travel ban means I can't get to its mountains. So heading west into the Catskills, where most mountains got 8-10". Amazing that despite not seeing many cars on the Thruway, the mountain's parking lot was full! Had to park on the access road and walk back!

The snow were too dry to stick to the icy groomer. So it's a mixed bag of powder interspersed by slick ice! Not too easy skiing. Interesting combo of fun & challenge.

Day 4

Have yet to see a snow plow. Crew is despondent; some have threatened to find episodes of "Jersey Shore" or "Dancing with the Stars" online. The horror. The horror!

Only 8 to 10 inches here in Brooklyn. Shoveled out about 60 feet of sidewalks, and 90 feet of driveway and, today, the rain is making sure everything is clean.

I used to love the workout of Shoveling show in NJ all those bad winters. That is a great work out...

Here, you wait a few and it melts, so far anyway...

And the calm after the storm I always dig too...
