Panic in New England!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6zaVYWLTkU

Good thing I topped up the cars yesterday morning. By afternoon, most of the gas stations in the area were out.

Panic

Not only did the grocery stores in my area have packed lots (interesting--lots of folks buying water) but the appliances (stove, washer, dryer) that were supposed to be delivered to my new house this afternoon showed up at 9:30 AM. Now that is scary!

Congrats on the new house. Which town did you settle in?

Thanks!

We're in Hamden, just a couple of miles from the place we were renting. We bought a nice pile of "built in 1922" and we're enjoying the heck out of it. Once we have "the new gas cooker" installed, it'll be close to ideal.

Putting down roots: you must have made partner, Andy.

Pfsssshhtt.

I wish. But my spouse has a tenure-track position at SCSU, so this is a good place for us.

Nice

Hamden is nice, my brother lives there. Awhile back he told me it was a buyer's market because Yale wasn't hiring.

Ha, if someone offered you partnership after this amount of time, run the other way.

Buyer's

It's not bad, an interest rate of 3.5% certainly helps. Yep, partner at this stage would be a setup, and not of the good kind.

So are most people living day to day with their groceries? I never understand this need to run to "stock up" every time one of these storms comes along. I'd bet we could go a month before anybody went hungry on the food we have in the house at this moment.

What do you need the gas for, if you're going to be stuck at home?

For the generator!

Don't forget, if there's large scale power outage (not expected in NY but more around Boston area), your neighborhood gas station might not be operational for a couple days after the storm. So it's gas up the car now, or drive around trying to find an open gas station AFTER the storm.

I don't get the impression you're one of those "doomsday ready" type. So...

What if you lose power?

-- if you're on a well, you need water from other sources. Say, bottle water?
-- if your cooking is electric (like I am), you need food that doesn't require cooking.

That's not to mention Friday is usually when people shop for the weekend. So that got moved up to Thursday, on top of the people who shop for supply specific for the storm.

And if you're going to be stuck at home for 2 days, you need a lot more BEER !

groceries

Doesn't freshness count for anything these days?

Things like vegetables and seafood, you need to buy it as fresh as possible prior to cooking.

True. Now that more and more stores are poping up with fresh produce (whole food and other specialty stores), it does benefit those of us who are fussy about fresh produce -- buy only small quantity instead of stocking up for monthes.

About 5" in central CT at 6:00 pm...

and the serious snow isn't supposed to get here for another few hours. There's enough beer and wine to see us through the weekend, but I should have thought to pick up some scotch.

About the same here

We're supposed to get about 2' altogether. I really want to get out on snowshoes Sunday, but don't want to reinjure my foot/ankle - I'll probably do it anyway.

Having some nice fresh haddock tonight. A little short on booze but I've got some wine and beer for when the gin runs out.

For a change, this time I'm watching the news, not being part of the news.

Thanks, Sparky!

Lots of wind and ice pellets in the greater New Haven (greater than what?) area. The cars are buried, but the fireplace works, so all to the good. Tomorrow will be a good day to accomplish things indoors, methinks...

Snowmageddon is unfortunately verifying as was forecast.

Well I'd have to run to wherever it is you buy a generator, first :)

Seriously it has bothered me some this year that we didn't buy any wood, so we're screwed if the power goes out for any extended period of time.

OTOH, we live on the main route to the University of Maine campus, so we're one of first places that gets power back whenever it goes out, which it hardly ever does.

Nice storm

Not to minimize any damage or inconvenience this might cause, but if you like snow, this storm is great. Hard to say exactly how much has fallen with blowing and drifting, I'd say about 20"' maybe more if it's wind packed, and it's still coming.

I've been out shoveling out the porch, steps and walk, raking the roof, putting down snowshoe tracks for the dogs (so much for my resolution not to snowshoe to protect my ankle). The snow is light powder, so much nicer than the wet, heavy, crusty stuff we often get. Should be a great weekend.

Ps they are saying 29" in Portland so the wind may be flattening it out on the ground.
