Egan Bernal may well be finito. {or not}
https://www.velonews.com/news/road/breaking-egan-bernal-in-the-hospital-following-crash/
Internet fodder thus far:
quote:
From a Colombian journalist: “After an explanation of this technical language from a medical specialist in this field, I understand that we no longer talk about cycling. Everything that happens in the next few hours will be ensuring Egan Bernal's quality of life after this accident”

What I saw was that Bernal has a fractured femur and patella, plus some less serious injuries. It didn't sound like something he couldn't recover from, though that will depend on the severity of the femoral fracture. Bernal and the doctors sounded upbeat about his recovery. It does seem likely that he's done for this season, but he's a young guy and will probably be back.

T5 and T6 injuries warranted concern I thought..

I didn't see anything about those. Yeah, a spinal injury is definitely concerning...
Considering the close call the team had with another car and multiple injuries now, it seem like Columbia is not a great place to train.

Best to him
There was spinal surgery as well as leg surgery, and from what I can tell he’s still in the ICU, so I think it’s more complicated than recovering from a femur fracture. I had a pretty bad femur fracture, on top of a hip replacement, and never came near the ICU. OTOH, I feel like it does not limit me at all now.
I really hope he fully recovers. When he won the Tour, I thought he would dominate for years. A beautiful rider, climbing on the hoods, smooth as silk.
It seems like he has a great attitude as well.

Until I saw Tadej Pogačar... Not to mention Primoz Roglic, those two are scary good.
But Egan had some other back problem prior. So as to if this make that worse, or maybe some sort of correction for previous issue got addressed in the surgery...
The other thing is; a vertebral fracture is a fracture, but if only [only!] the spinous or articular process [or facet] VS the pedicle section to the body of the vertebra. These have much different ramifications and prognosis.

Wow, apparently it was a lot worse than I originally heard. Frankly, he's lucky to be alive after plowing into the bus that hard.
Quite a few years back, a local triathlete out training was riding with his head down and plowed into the back of a tractor-trailer that was parked in the breakdown lane. He was killed instantly.

Equally lucky not to be paralyzed too!

When I started cycling in a serious way almost half a century ago, some riders still wore cycling jerseys with chest pockets. An older rider told me a story about being out on a solitary training ride wearing one of these jerseys, with a couple of chops wrapped in greaseproof paper in his chest pockets. He managed to ride into the back of a bus and knock himself out. When he came to, the bus driver was standing over him with a horrified look on his face - it transpired that the chops were sticking out of the chest pocket, and the driver initially thought that this was part of his anatomy.

nah
I'm guessing those chops would be pretty meaty for a cyclist....
Old school nutrition. Nothing like biting into a cold, greasy chop in the middle of a hard ride....
BTW I had a jersey with chest pockets.

He's come through that as well.
Horrific injuries. If he rides again, let alone races, it will be impressive.

The Ineos Grenadiers rider underwent his seventh surgery on Wednesday, the latest one taking place on his cervical vertebrae.
Egan Bernal has listed all the injuries he suffered in last week's collision with a bus in Colombia, writing on his Instagram that he has now had his last major surgery.
quote:
He [Bernal] listed his breaks as 11 ribs, one femur, a kneecap, T5 and T6 vertebrae,
C2 vertebrae
, a metacarpal, and one broken thumb. He also revealed that he lost one tooth in the accident.

yikes. That seems awfully soon. C2 is really nasty. I broke 3 and 7 far less seriously and didn't even get the brace off for six weeks

Makes me think probably was the spinous or articular process that was fractured to be as ambulatory this soon.

Rooting for him
Great news. Seems like a high character guy. Said something like “thank you God for giving me this test.” Wish him the best.
