Thanks for the compliment. I like showing people how the cheaper models can be attractive and functional bikes, since it's so much easier to find such bikes in good condition for a low price today.
Of course it lowers the hurdle for cash-strapped riders who might consider having a nice vintage ride as a second bike.
Having a second bike has the added benefit of allowing riders to more readily discover advantages of different fit parameters, though I have to admit that for me it took quite a few bikes before I had a sense of the whole fit thing as relates to frame dimensions and geometry, and suitable fore/aft saddle positioning and stem length for a given frame and it's intended usage.

No opinions on the hi-ten kobe and forged dropouts? I know a lot of you know the old stuff well. Is this more common that my sense dictates?

Various combinations of frame detail have been used here and there. Suntour forged dropouts would compliment any frame.

I recall being surprised to see a double-butted Hi-Ten or 1020 tubing sticker on a Sekai 500 sport-touring bike (that I later traded for a Honda PC-800, a bike thankfully with a bit of "cult following").

Any pic's available? I'm guessing this is a bike you've assembled yourself?

The dbl-butted 1020 tubes could be every bit as strong as the higher-grade ones, but obviously thicker, heavier and thus more dent-resistant against parked bike-rack traumas.
Forged dropouts would complete a seeming "durability" theme.
