If you had to replace a Garmin 800...
First of all, I'm a cheapskate. But I want good turn by turn (don't so much care about mapping other than for that). I have 57 yr old eyes. I need synch with powermeter, hrm etc, could care less about wifi connectivity (Strava can kiss my ass).
Wahoo Elemnt? Another 800? What say you?
-my current 800 is functional but has moisture under the touchscreen after 3 yrs...it in rice now, but suspect its not healing itself.

I used a Garmin 1000 last summer to navigate us across Switzerland and France using TCX courses I created using RideWithGPS, and it worked pretty flawlessly. But I didn't have the 1000 paired with anything such as a powermeter or HRM. With the latest version of firmware, Garmin seem to have introduced a problem where the 1000 crashes (i.e. switches itself off) while navigating if you have it paired - there's a long thread about it on the support forum at
https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?364781-v11-Crashing-on-Navigation
- unfortunately just the latest in a long line of wonderful software releases from Garmin. From the quality of the software they put out, you'd have to say that their managers couldn't organise a f**k in a brothel.
But the 1000, when it works, does have a better screen for displaying maps and navigation prompts than any other unit that I've seen.

I've been very happy with my Garmin 810, my poor eyesight can just read the screen, which I like that it's color. Can be found for about $300.
Lezyne Super GPS gets a lot of buzz for the feature set vs. price - $150. Much of it's functionality comes from the smartphone app it BT pairs with.
Does mapping and TBT, battery life is supposed to be 22 hrs.
REI has it at a good price and has a great return policy if you don't like it.

I replaced an 800 with an Elemnt. I have poor eyesight and used the 800 with the backlight on 100% so I could see it, and had to charge it every ride. The Elemnt is much easier to see and I dont need backlight.
I don't use the GPS stuff, I just use it as a wireless computer and have a speed sensor on the hub.
If GPS was the primary function I'd think the real estate of the Garmin 1000 would be hard to beat.

You can pick up 800's on the interwebs for pretty cheap, I think in the $150-$200 range.

Yeah, I know they're cheap. Mine has moisture under the touchscreen, and it left what I think is a film of salt...one wet ride on roads with the crap potassium chloride they use now. I'm going to take it apart and try to clean it with alcohol.
For 270 used, the Elemnt is tempting, now that it does routing anywhere from a smartphone, and can load tcx files. It gives you screen notification of texts and caller ID, which is an upper end garmin function. The little Rflkt does it too now, but its only routing is from ride with gps, which means no sensor data.

CaCl2

with the crap potassium chloride
I think you mean calcium chloride. KCl is not used as road salt, but "cackle two" works pretty well.

Agree w Nick re. Garmin 1000 assessment.
Screen is bigger than 800/810 and helpful for middleagedeyesyndrome, however battery life is less.
Bright sunny days will make screen more difficult to visualize for all models.
Note - I haven't dwnloaded the update yet bc still lots of snow on roads here.
