Was a generous performer, always invited any kids up on stage at the end and had picks for them. Often accessible backstage if you were polite. Unfortunately, you didn't miss much the last few years, he wasn't well and often played short sets.

He played with Phish a few years back, and he and Trey trading jams for 10 minutes at a shot is pretty cool. In interviews, he often said he couldn't play chords, only knew how to play lead.

I was lucky enough to see him a few years ago at Radio City, that was a fantastic show.

Payin' the Cost

To Be the Boss.

First heard him on an R&B station in Buffalo in the '60s. Saw him around '74, great show, he introduced the guys in the band and they'd been with him 17 years, 15 years, maybe 10 for a newcomer. What a career.
