Now that we have that mile long Ibis, I miss the Town And Country Van. It was huge in the back and the stow and go seats made simple work of making it huge fast. We could have fit two of them in there with the front wheels off for sure.

It's 5 hours and 45 minutes to San Diego. Judging by the mess of insects and "Spring-related stuff" all over the car at a steady 75-80mph, I'm very glad the bike stayed inside. I think a wagon can also fit a tandem, e.g. I believe the 3-series wagon I owned previously could do it.

However, the SUV allows us to fit a full-size suitcase as well next to it plus other bags (for helmets, shoes and bike stuff) and shopping with some room to maneuver. In fact, on Sunday, we parked near Mission Bay Park Visitor's Center and didn't have to take everything out in order to extricate the tandem for a ride around Fiesta Island, Mission Beach to Pacific Beach etc.
