Tadpole/upright?

The other day, I saw a tandem on the trail that was set up with a recumbent front, standard rear, and it looked like it was a tadpole that the recumbent captained, while the stoker had a nice overlook.

My spouse has significant arthritis problems with her hands that have prevented her from riding for many years, but recently saw a tadpole and thought that design might allow her to take the pressure off her hands.

I immediately thought of the tandem that I had seen--but about which, unfortunately, I hadn't got any information.

Has anyone here seen anything like this? I'm also willing to try a full tadpole tandem, but I kind of like the mixed idea...

Experience?

I've seen the type of tandem you describe (recumbent front, upright rear) several times on large organized rides like GOBA but I never noticed the maker or model name either.

I just did a Google search on "recumbent upright tandem" and got a bunch of hits. Two names mentioned are "Counterpoint Opus" and "Bilenky Viewpoint" with the Bilenky being a development of the Counterpoint.

Another model is the "Hase Pino" that is shown on the turningpointcycles.com web site from the UK but this is REALLY pricy.

Saw those...

But most of the mixed R/U tandems I've seen are not tadpoles, and, worse yet, make the rear rider the captain. I don't know about most people, but being cantilevered out over a single front wheel with no control would make me feel like a very vulnerable hood ornament! Bakfiets, anyone?

Do the mixed recumbent upright tandems have independent pedaling?
If so, that's a big advantage
