New York's Bike Share Program - effect on commuting

Here is a fascinating graphic display of how the New York City bike share program is being used:

http://www.newyorker.com/sandbox/business/citi-bike.html

This shows where bikes are docked throughout the system over the course of the first full month of use. The most telling is the last couple of weeks, after people have figured out how to best utilize the system. You can see a clear commuting pattern during weekdays with bikes being used to get to the business corridor during morning rush hour, and the reverse commute in the afternoon. Weekends are less pronounced, with wide recreational use. Interesting is July 4, where you can see the bikes being used to get to the west side for the Macy's fireworks display in the evening.

Over 35,000 individual uses per day now.

How many bikes do they have, guessing that will be increasing. And what is the max use expected I wonder.

They started with 6000, at 330 stations. Some reports indicate that the actual number in service at any given time now is more like 4500. They plan to go to at least 10,000 at 600 stations eventually.

35,000 trips a day means the average bike is being used around 8 times a day.

there are all kinds of stats on their website. Over 3.3 million miles since they started in late May.
