grammatical gender

quote:
Come on how can you tell if a chair is masculine or feminine? It is a damn chair and has no genital parts or chromosomes.

Grammatical gender doesn't necessarily correlate with regular gender. From wikipedia:

quote:
the German word See meaning "lake" is masculine, whereas the identical word meaning "sea" is feminine.

quote:
Sometimes a noun's gender can change between plural and singular, as with the French words amour ("love"), délice ("delight") and orgue ("organ" as musical instrument), all of which are masculine in the singular but feminine in the plural.

Also some nouns might be feminine in one language and masculine in another.
