According to "The Official New York Tourism Site," http://iloveny.com/ , NY State has 11 regions. And none of them are called upstate, imagine that.

Around here, anyone from north of Charlotte is a northerner and south of Savanna a snowbird.

No one uses Yankee anymore as odd as that may seem.

My only issue with the map is that I don't think I ever heard the term "downstate" NY. There's "New York" or "The City" and "Upstate."

"No one uses Yankee anymore"

I never thought I'd see the day (born in Raleigh, raised in Charlotte / Columbia)

Then again there's another word I used to hear white people use all day, every day; and now only black people use it.

It's for the better IMO.

There's a "Downstate Medical Center", part of the SUNY system, in Brooklyn.

The full quote (from H2G2) is "[They]'re so unhip it's a wonder [their] bumm[s] don't fall off."

Square

According to that great philosopher H. Lewis, "It's hip to be square."
