Doesn't the subwoofer...

...have it's own output level control? That's the key to balancing the sound. The subwoofer I installed for my girlfriend needs the sound level to be turned down a lot lower than I expected in order to keep the sound balanced.

Don't see anything obvious. Will read the manual later.

Also, it is not unusual for the sub to have a phase reversal option/switch. This can be useful, in that if there is an overlap in frequency it can be canceled out.

Example; if the sub and low driver for mains share a frequency. Ltes say the sub does 70-120hz, and the lows in the main drivers 90-1000hz. By reversing the phase on the sub, [or main speakers, either by switch or reversing the wires] the frequency from 90-120hz will get a degree of cancellation. This can take an accentuated 90-120hz frequency and un-accentuate this range instead. As the drivers will be moving in instead of out during excursion for bass notes on the reversed driver(s). Ever sub I have used in a car I have run this way FWIW.

Auto calibration

April,

The contribution of the sub also depends on the acoustics of your room and where you put it, e.g. corner.

If you really want better sound, step up a bit further and get something that has built-in auto room correction.
It will sweep your room across the lower frequencies and compensate.

And the sub will be more boomy against a wall or too close in a corner, or you can use the corner to make it's SPL more.. well more a few things.

2' from back wall and 3' from side wall is a good start if in the corner.

Not by a wall

There're already "stuff" by the wall. So the sub is sitting next to a box and in front of a pile of cables.

I'll see if there's adjustment of sub vs bar.

It's actually a decent size room, though no wall paper no carpet. So I can see it can get boomy easy.
